A lifetime of music
Fred Monthei has been playing his guitar and singing to whoever will listen since he was in junior high school in west-central Iowa in the 1960’s. Growing up among the cornfields and livestock of a family farm made it mandatory to listening to the radio. His father had been a jazz trumpeter before WWII and jazz influenced Monthei's early musical tastes. Taking up the piano at age 8, the trumpet at 10 and guitar at 12 has given him a lifetime of musical experience. Like many of the baby-boom era, Fred listened to the popular music of the “peace generation” and rocked away in a number of garage bands in the 70’s. .
Prior to moving to Cape Cod 25 years ago, he was playing his songs in Green Bay and Northeast Wisconsin. His style is standard acoustic with a wide variety of influences from the blues and rock & roll to old-timey sounding stuff. You’re likely to hear songs from John Prine, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet, Randy Newman, Eric Clapton, CSN, The Avetts, Jackson Browne and Neil Young, Then he'll take you all the way to the other end of the spectrum with a few old Irish favorites and a tune or two from the 20’s and 30’s. All in all, it’s a wide variety of music for all fans of acoustic American traditional rock and roll, laced folky Americana baby-boomer roots and blues music.
